Uncertainty abounds in the world. The institutions that we have known are fractured. We have fear, and in our fear we seek someone or something to provide a path to safety – a place we can go where we can be protected from all that will harm us.
At first, all we look for is strong leadership – someone to take charge. While everyone is cowering in fear, someone to show us a path to safety is what we seek. And that leader comes. If I actually stop and think about what he is saying, I may give his message pause. But I don’t stop and consider. He brings hope from the fear – a way to overcome. So, I follow.
He offers a new way. A way based in science. He says the ways of myths and religions are how we got into the mess we are in. They must go. We must now forge a new path. A path based on the ways of science, where we do not entertain faulty logic and everyone must comply and do their part. After all, that is how we stay safe. That is how we live healthy and disease-free lives.
There are many tenants of science. We must first start with the health of the planet. The human footprint is way too large, too negative. We must use less. Those who consume resources must make up for that with their actions and deeds. If they can’t, then do we really need them in our society? Survival of the fittest strengthens the species. So those whose life drains and doesn’t contribute, well we don’t really need them anymore. We can’t just kill them all at first. Instead, we just slowly remove resources that they can access which they need to survive. The medicines, the medical treatment, the energy credits. And eventually they all die. We didn’t have to execute them, we just needed to change the value of life. After all, that is science.
But what of who is left? We need more control over lives. It is for everyone’s good. We will control what people eat, how they remove germs from their body. We will track everything and penalize and reward based on compliance.
We next take on the family. After all, we want the state’s values to be instilled, not the misguided prejudices of one’s parents. Let the government raise the kids, devalue the family structure. Pretty soon, child bearing is one’s duty to the state but nothing more.
But as hard as we try to build this utopia based on science, resistance remains. Far from the capital, Xenon is radioactive. They somehow hold to the old ways. But, it won’t take much longer if we can just keep going.
We have a new world. One where we are safe. One grounded in science. And all it took was some fear.
Sound familiar? But it isn’t what you think. This is the world in Call of Kayden – A dystopian world started on a revolution in the name of science. But hope remains, if only eyes can be opened.
